Surgery What is AlloDerm?

AlloDerm is a type of skin graft material or "mesh" made from cadavers. It is often used in hernia repairs and breast reconstruction surgeries following mastectomies. It is also sometimes used for the treatment of severe burns or lacerations.

Who makes AlloDerm?

AlloDerm was originally developed by a company called LifeCell Corporation. In making this product, LifeCell processes or "purifies" the skin from cadavers. It claims that this process reduces the chances of infection, allergic reaction or rejection of the tissue by the recipient. However, recently published studies indicate that the design of this product needs improvement.

What are the symptoms of a defective AlloDerm product?

Many recipients have suffered recurring hernia and other complications, including injury to nearby organs, nerves and blood vessels. Other recipients have suffered adverse reactions to the mesh.
