Women who took bupropion (Wellbutrin) during the first trimester of pregnancy may have an increased risk of delivering a baby with heart defects. Moreover, after being born, infants can be exposed to danger because bupropion can pass into breast milk, posing harm to a nursing baby.

What is Wellbutrin and Zyban?

PillsWellbutrin (generically--bupropion hydrochloride) is a prescription antidepressant medication that is used to treat major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder. Additionally, at least one brand of bupropion (Zyban) has been used to help people stop smoking.

The study.

GlaxoSmithKlike, the manufacturer of Wellbutrin, conducted the Buproprion Pregnancy Registry from 1997 to 2008. The goal of this project was to collect information about any major birth defects involving infants whose mothers had taken bupropion during pregnancy. Among the twenty eight reported birth defects, twelve involved heart defects.
